What is STEAM and what does it look like at Ortega?

Ortega Elementary aims to provide students with a program designed to integrate science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics in the classroom.  STEAM will offer students the opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary, problem-based learning that cultivates innovative thinking and empowers leaders. STEAM education makes learning meaningful to the student by emphasizing collaboration, communication, research, problem solving, critical thinking, and creativity at each grade level. Ortega provides students with a learning environment that supports them as they make the connection between the concepts learned in class and how those concepts apply to the real-world in which they live.

Ortega students will benefit from the following:
  • Real-world problem-based learning that encourages collaboration and teamwork
  • Opportunities to engage in service learning projects
  • Guest speakers  from STEAM-related fields
  • School-wide engineering challenges for grades 2-5 (fall & spring)
  • Family STEAM Night (spring)
  • Enhanced learning from Digital Classrooms
